  3. 'Not making the best of array of attacking talent'published at 08:57 26 June

    08:57 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

What we're looking at here is the old story with England managers - in that the relationship [with fans] has fractured for many of them.

This is the case for an increasing number of England fans, and part of that is down to the expectation that there is.

This has always been the problem. The expectation. The feeling that England should be doing better than they are.

Why have we got it now? We've got it now because he [Gareth Southgate] has the best array of attacking talent that he has had at his disposal, and he's not making the best of it.

I get the frustration of the fans. Boo by all means but throwing cups is a step too far. Nobody deserves that.

    Matt

The scrutiny England receive for their performances is a little out of hand, and taking it out on the manager in such a manner is rather childish. The word entitlement comes to mind. It's a sport, not life or death, if you aren't enjoying it just turn it off.

    The Daily Mail

The Daily Mail references "another dull and desperate display", as well as highlighting the post-match behaviour of travelling England fans, who could be heard booing the side at full-time, while some threw empty cups at Gareth Southgate.

Let's be clear. We have a better England team, who won the Euros two years ago, who show more cohesion, and appear to get on with each other on and off the pitch.

England completed 746 passes and had 12 shots - of which four were on target - against Slovenia but could not find a breakthrough.

Reflecting on England's lack of goals in the tournament thus far, Conor Coady told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast: "I think we are lacking a bit of confidence and that doesn't help you to take risks.

"It became a bit too easy and we were passing 10-yard balls back to Declan Rice for no reason. We have to get our confidence back quick and believe in each other."

Former England defender Conor Coady says England are yet to arrive "on this huge stage" of the Euros.

"All of us - fans and pundits - are a little bit worried with what we are seeing," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"Pundits were saying before the game that they wanted to see a reaction [from the Denmark draw] and it to be the game where England arrive on this huge stage.

"But we still have not really seen that.

"I don't think England shone because there were little chances created."

  9. 'What's the scorey? Yawning glory'published at 08:39 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

    The Sun

Some supporters may have gone over the top in expressing their anger with Gareth Southgate's England team in Cologne, but today's front page of the Sun picks up on the apathy that some feel with their performances so far in Germany, which have included just two goals in three matches.

The newspaper has used sleepy puns to reflect on a lethargic performance from England.

The "bore draw" against Slovenia did however get the job done as the "Three Lie-ins" progressed to the last 16.

  10. Southgate 'can hack' the pressurepublished at 08:31 26 June

    08:31 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

Michael Caulfield, who works as a sports phycologist at Brentford and was previously at Middlesbrough with Gareth Southgate, told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that the England manager is well equipped to deal with the criticism.

Fans booed off England after Tuesday's draw with Slovenia and some threw empty plastic cups at Southgate as he went to applaud supporters after the game in Cologne.

"He is the one person who can hack this [pressure]. He is now so experienced as a leader, and he is a leader as he is much as he is a football coach.

"Blocking it out [criticism] is silly, it's like trying to blocking out the sun on a gorgeous day like today - you simply can't do it. He is aware of it, and he is addressing it.

"He is more than willing and will take as much flack as he needs to help and protect the team, the environment. So when they do play the Netherlands or the team they have to play on Sunday evening, they are able to play with a bit more joy."

I understand Southgate’s comments on the unusual environment. England’s performances have been below expectation but the reaction has been over the top. It’s turning toxic and I can’t see this ending well. Funny when you put things into perspective, top of the group, unbeaten, 1 goal conceded - but no denying the performances have been far from the quality that we are expecting.

  12. Should Southgate drop 'big names'?published at 08:21 26 June

    08:21 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

    Izzy Christiansen
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the emotion needs to be taken out of the situation. A lot of the players have spoken about the idea of doing the nation proud but that will come if the performances improve and you get it right on the pitch. Remove a bit of the emotion and focus on what's next.

England need to start adapting and looking at what players can cause damage. If that means dropping big names then that does not matter because the team is the most important thing.

  13. Third midfielder is a 'problematic position'published at 08:19 26 June

    08:19 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

    Sam Wallace
Chief football writer for Daily and Sunday Telegraph on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast

I think we can certainly be relieved.

What we’re lacking here is momentum. Although clearly the top of the group thingis important, we’re now three games into a tournament and it’s clear themanager is reaching for a team here. What he’s come with is plan A, which has notworked. He’s now gone through three midfielders inthat problematic position alongside Declan Rice.

So, things are changing quickly, the question is where does it get to, and is a big decision coming. So far, [Gareth] Southgate has been clearly loyal, and I don't think he wants to indicate to his players what they've prepared for two weeks isn't working.

I don't want to sound too pessimistic but this feels like World Cup 2010 all over again. Huge expectations before the tournament with a top group of players but then insipid group games and we got thrashed in the knockouts by the first decent team we played. Fans pay a lot of money to travel and watch these games so frustration in the stadium is understandable. We all want England to do well and play good football. The big question is what's wrong at the moment?

    Mike, Tunbridge Wells

I guess the big difference, Mike, between the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2024 is that England have avoided Germany in the first knockout round. Had Denmark scored against Serbia on Tuesday night and the Three Lions had finished in second place rather than top of Group C, they would have ended up in the top half of the draw...and reaction to England's draw against Slovenia could well have been very different.

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, agreed with Anthony Gordon that the side is missing something, but believes there were some positive signs of progression: "It was a difficult night but I think it was our best performance out of the three.

"We had more energy, we pressed better, counter pressed better, did better with the ball. We just lacked a big of magic in the final third but that will come. Another clean sheet which we will need if we are to go far in the tournament.

"We enjoy it and move on."

England and Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon echoed the sentiments of many fans when he said the players "can do so much better".

He added: "We have got such good players, training is so good every day, we do everything right and then it's just not clicking. Hopefully in the coming days it will because we really need to start attacking teams and dominating games."

England defender John Stones, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Super pleased to top the group, it is what we came here to do in the first phase of the tournament.

"I am super proud of the team for getting another clean sheet which is always important in tournament football.

"We know we have got to improve and do better. I think tonight was a good step towards that. There was a lot of emotions and pressure on the game but we handled that really well.

"We wanted the three points of course, but to top the group shouldn't be underestimated."

I understand and share the frustration of fans, but throwing things at the team/manager after a handful of off performances is ridiculous. This national team is in a much better place than it has been for years!

    Thom

I think the England football team will be fine. They're all experienced players and talented. Whether they need to switch off the noise, relax, communicate with each other more, whatever - they can do it. Fans just don't want to see another set of exciting players miss their major tournament chance. Results will only change under pressure if genuine confidence and belief are there. We'll do it because we know we will. Fans will stay with the team.
