The offseason is a time to wish football was back, wait patiently for football to come back, and complain about not having football on Sunday.

It is also one of those times when we get a chance to reminisce, debate, and discuss. Who are the greatest Denver Broncos players? What should the stadium be called? How much are the Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers going to suck?

When Ian St. Clair and I had Ryan Edwards of Orange and Blue 760 on the Mile High Report Radio podcast, we had one of those quintessential offseason discussions: Which Broncos are the most undervalued in history?

It’s difficult to quantify what makes a player undervalued or under appreciated. How do you decide? And isn’t declaring them under appreciated showing appreciation? Every Broncos fan has a player they loved, even though many fans didn’t show the same appreciation.

During our discussion on the podcast, it became apparent that I was never going to be able to get my answers out before Ian and Ryan. First, Ian stole my answer, Dennis Smith. Whenever people think of heavy-hitting safeties, Steve Atwater is at the forefront of Broncos Country. That being said, Smith was a terrifying player. He definitely left his mark on the fanbase and the league.

The next player stolen out of my brain was Steve Foley. The franchise leader in career interceptions, he played opposite of Louis Wright. This may have overshadowed his career, but he definitely belongs in the Ring of Fame.

Some other names that came up: Simon Fletcher, Darrien Gordon, and Howard Griffith. The conversation is a fun one. As we wait for training camp, and sit through the “Don’t Do Anything Stupid” season, reminiscing about Broncos past is a great way to pass the time.

What say you MHR community? Which players in Broncos history are the most undervalued and under appreciated in your opinion?
