Bottom Line

The 171-room Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara is an upper-middle-range hotel that sits across from the ocean in a collection of historic, Spanish colonial-style buildings with white stucco walls and red tile roofs. It’s located around two miles from the main tourist attractions in Santa Barbara. A charming, historic building overlooking the ocean

Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara Review: What To REALLY Expect If You Stay (9)

Showcasing more charm and character than the average Hyatt hotel, the Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara features wide archways and panoramic ocean views. Built in 1931, the historic structure sits among tall palm trees and lush, tropical greenery. Cabrillo Boulevard separates the hotel from East Beach, where the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center and East Beach Grill are located. The lobby has high-vaulted ceilings and a living room style sitting area with a fireplace. The lobby is lit by large hexagonal hanging globes and a wrought iron chandelier. Situated off the side of the room, even the front desk has stylish character and feel to it.

Location

Across from the beach and within two miles of Stearns Wharf

The Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara is located directly across Cabrillo Boulevard from East Beach. The Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center, East Beach Grill, a water sports rental facility, and a busy boardwalk frequented by cyclists and runners are also right across the street. The Santa Barbara Zoo is less than a 10-minute walk from the Hyatt. State Street, a popular shopping, dining, and nightlife area, is located a little further than walking distance (about two miles), but it’s an easy cab or bicycle ride away. There is a shuttle that stops in front of the hotel that will take guests to and from Stearns Wharf, where there are local candy shops and waterfront cafés.

Basic rooms; some with ocean views

Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara Review: What To REALLY Expect If You Stay (10)

The standard rooms at the Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara are basic with updated white linens and simple decor. Some rooms have direct ocean views and balconies with a small table and two chairs. Even though the rooms have been renovated, some guests complain that the air conditioning units are old and can be quite noisy. The decor feels a bit tired and lacks any panache; the common areas of the hotel are much more charming. All rooms have a mini-fridge, flat-screen TV, iHome stereo, and a coffeemaker. Guests have to pay a fee for in-room Wi-Fi. Suites are more spacious with modern decor and fancy little extras like Nespresso coffeemakers.

Bistro 1111, the in-house restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (no free breakfast here). Some guests complain that the menu can be pricey compared to other area restaurants. Appetizers and co*cktails are served in the lounge. As part of the hotel’s “Stay Fit” program, the gym features more equipment than a typical hotel fitness center, like a variety of weight and cardio machines, as well as free weights. There’s a spa, which offers massages, body treatments, and facials. The outdoor, heated pool overlooks East Beach, across the street. There’s also a hot tub, fire pit, and mini putting green. Wi-Fi is free in common areas and available for a fee in the rooms.
