Abandoned Cave is the fourth chapter of Dave the Diver. This walkthrough guide will see you through every aspect of exploring the Giant Blue Hole, from catching fish and serving them at Bancho Sushi to upgrading Dave's diving gear, completing quests, and taking down the toughest bosses the Giant Blue Hole has to offer.

Spoiler Warning

This walkthrough will include story spoilers for Chapter 4: Abandoned Cave, so proceed with caution.

To the Abandoned Cave

Return to Tenzhin's House the next day and speak to him. He'll tell you to head to the Abandoned Cave. Suwam will lead you there, and warn you about some Sea People who went crazy and attacked other people. They were imprisoned in the Abandoned Cave, but it's been a long time since then, so they're probably all dead. This surely isn't foreshadowing. When you're ready to enter the Abandoned Cave, talk to Suwam and choose "Accept."

Your goal is to find the Glacial Passage Key, which is located deep in the cave, in a room with a mural. Start off by proceeding straight ahead until you come to a metal gate. A cutscene will play, and surprise! Those crazy Sea People aren't dead after all! They're alive and very hostile. The one you see eats a Sea Bream alive right in front of you, so you'll want to stay out of their way.

After the cutscene, follow the linear path, going down, left, down, and finally right with the curve of the Abandoned Cave. Eventually, you will come to a small room with a mural on the right side of the cave.

This mural is essentially telling you how to solve the room's puzzle. To solve it, you're going to want to recreate the mural on the raised platform with the three small squares in front of it. To do so:

  • Place the rock with the circle in the center on the leftmost spot
  • Place two rocks without symbols rock in the middle spot, then top them with the rock with a square in the center
  • Place a rock without symbols in the rightmost spot and then top it with the rock with the X in the center

You can pick up the rocks with the right mouse button or right trigger. When you're done, everything should match the mural, and look like the picture below.

Once everything is in the right place, the raised platform will lower and the reappear with the Glacial (or Glacier, Dave the Diver can't seem to decide on a name and calls it both) Passage Key on top of it. Grab it. This completes Find the Glacial Passage Key.

Deliver Key to Tenzhin

Unfortunately, doing so causes parts of the Abandoned Cave to collapse and releases the Gadon, mutated, hostile Sea People, from their cages. After a brief cutscene, you'll be back in control of Dave, and have to escape the Abandoned Cave without the Gadon catching you.

Start by swimming up the passage above you. A Gadon will be patrolling from left to right above you. Wait until he is facing right and swimming past you to swim by him.

Continue swimming up the passage until you trigger another cutscene with a Gadon moving past some statues in an otherwise open area. You won't be able to pass this Gadon normally. Instead, you'll have to hide behind the statues as it passes you by, then move to the next statue while it's safe.

Start by hiding behind the first statue by holding the right mouse button or right trigger while the Gadon swims away from you. Once he goes past you, and is facing away from you, move to the next statue. The Gadon may notice something, but as long as you're hiding behind the statue before he spots you, you'll be fine. Once he's facing away from you again, move to the next statue, then repeat for the third statue before leaving the area when the Gadon isn't looking in your direction.

Once you're past him, follow the path down until you see two moving walls of spikes. Wait until they both retract before you swim past them. To your right, there's another Gadon and another series of statues. You can sneak past him the same way you did earlier to grab a Silver Bowl, but this is optional.

To continue, follow the path down until you get to four walls of moving spikes. Wait for all of them to retract, and then dash through them. You should have just enough time to make it. Alternatively, you can wait in the gap between the second and third wall of spikes, and then proceed when the third and fourth ones retract.

From there, follow the path up until you trigger a cutscene. An earthquake knocks down more metal gates and releases more Gadon, but Dave will escape. You're not out of the woods yet, though. Get ready for a boss fight.

Boss Fight: John Watson

John Watson's back and he's not happy with you. He's also wearing a protective suit this time around, so your weapons won't work on him. First things first: as soon as the fight starts, head down to the supply crate in the middle of the area and open it to get the Baseball Bat. You'll need this for the fight.

John Watson has four attacks, but all of them are telegraphed. He'll rear back with his left arm and try to punch you at close range. You can avoid this by swimming away from it or going above or below it.

His shoulder tackle returns from the previous fight. John Watson will rear back with his right arm for a moment before charging forward in your direction. Avoid it by going above or below it.

John Watson will also try to grab you with his grappling hook. He'll let you know this attack is coming by pulling his right arm back. Bubbles will form around the pincer on his right arm. This attack doesn't have a lot of range, so you can avoid it by going over or under it, or just swimming away.

John Watson's final attack is his most important. A missile launcher will emerge from the back of his suit, and he'll fire a missile that will follow you. After a while, the missile will stop. Dash away from it, and wait for it to stop, then hit it back at John Watson with your baseball bat. There's no need to aim, just hit it in his direction. It will explode on contact. This is the only way to damage him.

After a few hits, John Watson will get angry and ram his pinchers together. At this point, he gains a new attack where he will dash at you and then release a field of mines from his suit. They take a few seconds to explode, so as long as you don't hit one of the mines, you'll be okay. Swim out of the minefield to avoid damage.

After a few more hits, John Watson will run away. Loot the Sea Blue Armor Debris he drops.

Afterward, you'll be transported to Tenzhin's House, where he will tell you a long story about the origins of the Gabon. You can choose between a short and long version. The short version is very short, and the longer version is a cutscene, but you have to watch the long version anyway. Afterward, you'll get the Sea People Necklace, which will cause Tube Worms to retract when you wear it. This completes Deliver Key to Tenzhin.

Suwam will take you to the entrance of the Glacial Passage, but you'll have to wait until the next day to go. Now is a great time to finish up any sidequests in the Sea People Village or gather any fish you might need for VIPs at Bancho Sushi.

Stormy Night 2

That night, an earthquake will rock Bancho Sushi, but before you can go over there to check it out, Sato will come by to tell you about another Vortex and another boss you can go fight. Once again, this mission will disappear if you don't do it immediately (though they may reappear during later storms), so it's best to do it now. Grab a gun (a Red Sniper Rifle is an excellent choice here if you've crafted it), and dive in when you're ready.

This Vortex is about 30 meters deep. You'll probably hear it before you see it. It sounds like a deep roar, so follow that sound if you have trouble finding it. Once you locate it, head inside.

Once inside, you'll see a weapon chest and two air tanks on the bottom. If you don't have a Red Sniper, grab the one inside the weapon chest and then move forward to fight the boss.

Boss Fight: Mantis Shrimp

Yes, that is a giant Mantis Shrimp wearing boxing gloves, and he's here to knock you out. He may look big, but you can take him down by shooting at his eyes when he's not covering them with his boxing gloves. If he is covering his eyes, your bullets will glance off the gloves.

The Mantis Shrimp only has a few attacks. First, he'll pull his right glove back slightly before throwing a punch at you. This is a subtle shift, but you'll know it's happening when his right glove is almost obscured by his left glove. Usually, the right glove is clearly visible. This attack tracks, so keep moving up or down to avoid it.

His second attack is a punch with his left glove. This is more noticeable because he pulls his entire arm back. This punch only goes straight forward, so avoid it by going under it. Be careful not to get hit by his glove as he pulls his arm back to its resting position.

The Mantis Shrimp also has an uppercut. He'll pull his left arm down near his body before he swings, so back away from him to avoid it. He only seems to do this attack when you're near the wall with the spikes, however.

Finally, sometimes the Mantis Shrimp will jump back and pound the ground with his gloves. This causes a large current to flood the area. After that, he'll rear back for a big strike. When he does, swim over to the glowing chain on the left side of the area and pull it down until the yellow weight down until it is in front of you. The Mantis Shrimp will punch it, and the impact will stun him. This is a great time to do damage.

Once you deal enough damage, the Mantis Shrimp will go down for the count. Be sure to search his remains for Mantis Shrimp Tail and Mantis Shrimp Meat. Once you're done, take the Vortex back to the boat.

Dr. Bacon at Bancho Sushi

That night, Dr. Bacon will show up at Bancho Sushi to make sure everyone is okay. Operate Bancho Sushi as normal and make sure to pour Dr. Bacon plenty of beer. Afterwards, you'll take control of Dr. Bacon as he heads out to investigate a cave he picks up on his Sea People Radar.

Once you gain control of Dr. Bacon, enter the cave. You'll see three murals inside. Investigate each of them by walking up to them and pressing space bar or X/square. Take note of the three red symbols above each mural. You'll need them to open the door just past this room.

To open the door, interact with the device to the left of it and input the symbols in the order you saw them on the mural. Once you have all three in place, the door will open.

Inspect the two murals in the next room to learn how the falling out between the Sea People and humans happened, and open the chest in the right corner of the room to get a Sea People Rebreather.

Escape the Pirates

Dr. Bacon will be ambushed by pirates and runs to his boat to escape. You'll control the boat as you maneuver to avoid rocks and the pirates, who are shooting you. Focus primarily on avoiding getting shot by the pirates. They can only fire in a straight line, and you'll see where they're about to shoot because a laser sight will appear before they fire. Dr. Bacon's boat turns slowly, so you'll probably hit some rocks, but don't worry: it can take quite a few hits before things get bad. Once you escape from the pirates, Chapter 4 will end.
